What if great leadership isn’t about having all the answers? 🤔
15 October 2026We’ve been developing a variety of leadership programmes recently for clients across the UK and internationally, alongside continuing some fabulous 1-to-1 executive coaching relationships.
And one theme keeps emerging, albeit in different guises: the relationship between change, adaptability and how leaders communicate, connect and engage with others.
And one thought keeps coming back to me…
📣 “When did we decide that being a leader meant having all the answers?” 📣
There is often an unspoken expectation that leaders should know what to do, have a clear plan and confidently point everyone in the right direction. But in a world characterised by uncertainty, complexity and constant change, is that really realistic?
Perhaps one of the most powerful things a leader can say is: “I don’t know”. What do you think?
Not because they’re lacking confidence or capability, but because they recognise that the best ideas dont necessarily come from the person with the most senior job title. Of course, this requires something else: psychological safety.
An environment where people feel comfortable sharing ideas, challenging assumptions and occasionally getting things wrong without fear of embarrassment or repercussions.
And that’s where I think IQ, EQ and AQ come together beautifully.
🧠 IQ helps us think well.
❤️ EQ helps us connect deeply.
🔄 AQ helps us adapt intelligently.
Great leadership isn’t about knowing everything. Its about creating the conditions where people can think, contribute, learn and adapt together.
🤔 So here is a little Friday reflection:
“When was the last time you asked your team a question you genuinely didnt know the answer to?”
